Launch of ‘La vie est belle’
The story of La vie est belle starts in Rwanda, the destination of the young couple Stefaan Deraeve and Katrien Steeman who travelled there to volunteer in a healthcare center. A few years later they returned back to Belgium with a concrete idea on how to launch their own company producing vegetarian burgers which they named La vie est belle.
And from the early start quality and taste have always been top priority. Their ultimate mission was to seduce people with their tasteful products and by doing so introduce them into vegetarian cooking. The couple grew out to become true pioneers in the production of delicious vegetarian products.
Focus on nutritional value and taste
Creative cooking is also a passion of Katrien and Stefaan’s son, Lieven Deraeve. He is a chef of education and is – since a few years – taking the lead in the lab kitchen of the company. In this test environment Lieven can ‘go all in’ in the quest to develop a delicious and complete end product. It is only in a later stage that the ‘feasibility’ of the product is investigated and tested in the production area.
With a chef joining the team, the company was ready to optimize their product range. The composition of every product was analyzed based on the quality of the ingredients and the nutritional value of the end product. At the same time the production was upscaled and professionalized. In the phase of product (re)development the company experiments with a wide variety of ingredients and vegetables that determine flavour and texture of the end product. But in the final evaluation taste, texture and nutritional value are always top of mind.
Strong family values
Lieven is not the only family member that is engaged in the business. With Nele, Karel and Lieven three of the four siblings carry responsibility in the organization. This also means that continuity is guarantied for the next generations.
Through the years the company has grown in a stable and sustainable way. Currently La vie est belle has around 25 employees. The team also includes a few people that have a mental or physical disability. The credo of the company is that every member of the team has equal value and importance for the team and its performance. La vie est belle wants to extend its vision on care – that is typical for the organic vegetarian movement – to the social structures in the company and in society
Keeping sustainability in mind
The products of La vie est belle are all organic, made without the use of any preservative nor additive, and – if possible – contain seasonal products from local producers. Sustainability for La vie est belle is a process in which the company constantly challenges itself on all levels, and raises its own standards to optimize its internal functioning.
La vie est belle believes in a bright future, in the growth of the company and the further development of the market for organic vegetarian products. People are more conscient about their food, and that will cause the market for organic and ecological products to grow. And La vie est belle is more than dedicated to contribute!
